This short animation explains what happens when a child has a joint injection and a small sample of tissue (biopsy) taken from their joint for research.

Designed primarily for children aged 10 and under, the animation explains what to expect before, during and after the procedure, including meeting the healthcare team, having an ultrasound scan, going to sleep under general anaesthetic and recovering afterwards.

It also explains how donating a small sample of joint tissue can help researchers better understand arthritis and develop improved treatments for children and young people.

The animation was developed with input from researchers, healthcare professionals and patient and public contributors. It aims to provide clear, age-appropriate and reassuring information for children and their families.

Please note: This animation provides general information. Individual hospital procedures may vary, and your healthcare team can explain what will happen during your appointment and answer any questions.

This animation was developed as part of the Tissue Research in Childhood Inflammatory Arthritis (TRICIA) Consortium, funded by the Medical Research Council (MRC), grant reference MR/W028557/1. Produced by the University of Birmingham Creative Media team.
